Main Idea - Create a book trailer for Lessons of a Lac highlighting the main idea of the book and encouraging people to read the story.

List the similarities and differences between the Lacs and the Calmsters. Using a venn diagram compare yourself to one of the characters (Lacs or Calmsters). Think about the similarities you share and the differences.
List the positives and negatives of being a Lac or a Calmster.
Imagine you are Loppy Lac. Write a diary entry for a day in your life. Imagine you are Curly. Write a diary entry for a day in your life.
You are better off worrying than not worrying - decide on what side you are going to take and write an exposition convincing people of your argument.
Write a different ending for the story.
In small groups role play your favourite part of the story.
Discuss diversity between cultures and relate to the different villages of the Lacs and Calmsters. reinforce that they were able to co-exist once they understood each other more.

With permission, the teacher copies several pages of the book without words printed. The children then write their own dialogue of what they think is happening in the picture. make a class book.
Photocopy illustrations in the book. Children label parts of the pictures using descriptive language.
Look at the words on page 3. Two words are written in different font. Find other words throughout the text that are also written differently (focus on single words not quotation marks). Discuss the reasons why. Brainstorm if any other words in the text could be in a different font. Write a whole class narrative about Lacs and/or Calmsters. Use different fonts to emphasise some descriptive words.
Look at page 13 and 14. Discuss and identify the quotation marks. Identify who the Lac is talking to. Why is the text in different font? Brainstorm additional questions the Lac might ask. What do you think the Calmsters are doing at the same time the Lac is thinking? Design an additional page for the story that shows what they are thinking. Write what they are thinking using quotation marks.
